Mr. Dorros represents clients in all aspects of complex commercial litigation, business law, privacy, data breach, and intellectual property litigation and appeals, with a particular focus on the Healthcare; Entertainment and Media; and Internet, Software, and Technology industries. Mr. Dorros has an intimate understanding of the complex and continually evolving privacy, mobile, digital, social media, technology, telemedicine, and e-health landscape.
A significant aspect of Mr. Dorros’ practice is privacy compliance with a particular emphasis on medical records and protected health information (“PHI”) privacy issues. Mr. Dorros has successfully represented clients both on an individual and class action basis in State and Federal Court nationwide in significant and groundbreaking cases related to PHI privacy and confidentiality violations and data breaches. Often Mr. Dorros’ cases involve or arise from violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”), the California Confidentiality of Medical Information Act (“CMIA”), the heightened confidentiality requirements under 42 C.F.R., Part 2, and analogous state laws for certain types of medical conditions, treatments, and diagnoses, and other health and personal information privacy laws and regulations.
Mr. Dorros represents Entertainment and Media clients in matters related to branded entertainment, privacy, advertising, and licensing/sponsorship of mobile and wireless technologies and consumer packaged goods. He has significant experience representing clients involved in graphic novels/comic books, animation (including new media formats), and special, digital, and visual effects, virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D, and the related industries, including video games, mobile content, and film/television. Having been the General Counsel for the Jackson Hole Film Institute, he regularly assists both media and non-media corporate clients as “outside general counsel” overseeing all of the clients’ transactional and litigation legal needs.
Mr. Dorros is often called upon to advise clients in commercial and intellectual property litigation and appeals and corporate transactions related to technology and technology industry-related companies. Mr. Dorros routinely provides general/day-to-day corporate legal advisory services, from corporate formation to mergers and acquisitions, as well as licensing of products, services, and intellectual property for a broad-based corporate clientele. Mr. Dorros’ technology practice often relates to bridging the gap between a client’s offline and online or mobile presence.
Mr. Dorros was born and raised in Southern California. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Houston Law Center. He then completed a Master of Laws Degree from Fordham School of Law. He is admitted to the Bars of California, New York, the District of Columbia, and Wyoming. Licensed and practicing in multiple jurisdictions, Mr. Dorros has represented clients in both State and Federal trial and appellate courts — including the United States Supreme Court — as well as provided strategic appellate trial counseling and substantive motion practice advice for cases worldwide. He has represented individuals, countries, multibillion-dollar multinational corporations, and national trade associations in sophisticated and groundbreaking appellate and trial-level matters involving Constitutional and common-law privacy rights, HIPAA, CMIA, the Foreign Sovereign Immunity Act (“FSIA”), medical peer review confidentiality, EMTALA, tort liability for blood banks’ transfusion procedures, Medicaid/Medicare rate reimbursement disputes, ERISA, the Lanham Act/trademark infringement/false advertising/trademark dilution, the Copyright Act, domain names, online advertising, entertainment “credit” disputes, invasion of privacy and publicity rights, the Federal Arbitration Act, the National Bank Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Truth in Lending Act, state and federal lending laws, securities violations, multimillion-dollar premises liability, large-scale construction defect, wage and labor law, and sophisticated complex and commercial disputes.
